Discover Original Oil Paintings by Steven Lemire
Welcome to the online art gallery of Steven Lemire. Based in the heart of Mérida, Yucatán, self-taught artist Steven Lemire specializes in original oil paintings characterized by rich, tactile depth, dynamic movement and bold contemporary style. Explore the complete collection of hand-crafted abstract and expressive canvas works available for collectors worldwide.
1. Artist Background & Creative Journey
Born and raised in Vancouver as the youngest of seven in a close-knit family, Steven built a successful 40-year career in hospitality, catering and event management. His final six years with an exclusive events firm took him from elegant weddings to global conferences, working with esteemed clients and collaborating with top culinary artists whose creativity first sparked his own artistic vision.
At 43, he and his partner Sanda, relocated to Mérida, Yucatán, transforming a historic property into the private luxury hacienda-style rental home known as Casablanca Living.
Without formal training, Steven began creating original oil paintings in 2012, focusing on modern and contemporary abstract works. By early 2019, he had sold dozens of original canvases—including monumental pieces measuring up to two by three meters. By 2025, he officially celebrated his 100th completed painting, Honeycomb. Today, he continues to live and create in a vibrant city he loves, inviting art lovers around the globe to share in that happiness through his portfolio.
2. Unique Technique: Spatula-Applied Oil Paintings
What sets these original oil paintings apart is a distinct, signature physical process. Rather than traditional brushwork, Steven applies dense, three-dimensional and heavily textured layers almost exclusively using spatulas—often compared to “like spreading icing on a cake.”
Key Elements of the Technique:
- Textural Depth: Multiple thick layers of oil paint create stunning surface topography that catches light dynamically throughout the day.
- Spontaneous Process: Guided heavily by emotion, ambient sound and the warm Mérida environment rather than rigid pre-planning.
- Mixed Media Elements: Select contemporary pieces incorporate organic textures, such as genuine beach sand, to amplify contrast.
3. Gallery of Available & Sold Works
Steven’s catalog features a diverse range of original oil paintings, with canvas sizes reaching up to six by nine feet. While some pieces find homes through private commissions, a curated selection remains available for acquisition.
Featured Original Works Include:
• Honeycomb (The 100th milestone painting)
• Ever Green (Available)
• Gray Poupon (Available)
• Fishing (Available)
• FLOW (Available)

4. Themes, Influences & Creative Process
Every piece reflects abstract explorations of emotion, natural light, texture and serendipity. Living in Mérida provides a constant source of inspiration through its warm climate, slower pace, starlit nights and rich cultural heritage.
Steven shares his creative life with Sanda, frequently hosting joint painting sessions accompanied by music and relaxed studio breaks. The philosophy remains intuitive and open-ended: if a composition does not immediately resonate, it is reworked and layered until the canvas “feels right.”
5. Exhibitions, Events & Recognition
Steven’s work has been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions, collectives and charity fundraisers across Mérida and Vancouver:
